Front Rim fluid.... |
Lead | |
|
My bike has been in my garage over the bank holiday weekend and on getting back on it to go to work - i noticed there seemed to be a slight oil discharge on
the ground around my front wheel - on closer inspection - some oil-y looking fluid has leaked and dripped onto the front wheel inside rim and also dropped a
few drips of oil-y fluid onto the floor. The only place i think this could have come from is somewhere like the front brake set up? Has anyone noticed
anything similar? What should i be tightening or investigating to be loose??

front brakes or front forks. have a closer look or clean up the mess and see where it apears from
either way dont ride it until you know whats going on |

Yeah, gotta be one of the above. Check the brake line connectors and take a flashlight around the forks. If you do alotta wheelies, probably fork seals blew.

it could still be fork seals even if you never wheelie, its just less likely

Have you got a cat or a dog? One of the little sods may have p!ssed up the wheel.
Also, what does the fluid taste like - brake fluid tastes far different to fork oil (and I would imagine that they both taste completely different to p!ss) |

you need me there - im known for identifying fluids by taste (steady now!)

Thanks Guys - though im not sure im brave enough to taste the deposit.....its light-ish brown and resembles oil - yes i do have a cat but she prefers to dump
and piss in her litter tray - but good idea though - its being looked at today and i shall let you know what gets discovered.......

have a look where its coming from then. if you cant tell clean it then try again
pump the forks see if anything comes out, pump the brakes, see if they feel normal and if any fluid comes out |

Ok - the official diagnosis is the Right Hand Fork Seal.....its toast - it leaks oil.
Will need the Seal and Oil replaced - not too bad - oh and there is aparently discharge on my brake pad - but im reluctant to change them at this time so going to just get them cleaned up as best as possible......and see how i get on... Could be worse i guess....

I wouldn't dick around with contaminated brake pads. If they've had fork oil on them, change them now and put it down to experience.

Just wanted a mini rant....
took the bike to my local garage last thursday - and expected it be be complete and ready for collection on Friday - just to summarise again is a fork seal with associated oil and also brake pad (due to contamination) replacement. Thought at the worst i could collect on Friday as i was told they didnt have a lot of work on.......Not the case - have just phoned them now (nearly a week later and was told the part still hadnt come in! It MAY be tomorrow but they dont know.....im getting slightly peeved by the delay as they said there are only certain times they could order stuff from Yamaha(????- no idea why this is possible at certain times??) and asking did they know how much longer it was going to be they couldnt give me an answer......im getting to the stage where i just want to take it from their and either find somewhere else or have a bash myself - but my skills as a mechanic - are pretty limited......im just fed up as i want to ride it and it looks like ive missed the best of the nice weather.....

pads are pish to change yourself, as for the forkseals i honestly dont know as i havent done them on the fazer yet, prob will when the time arrives though as
so far most stuff has been easy to work on with the fazer. and i am far from knowing what i am doing. but with so much help on this site anythings possable.
sounds like there ordering gen yam seals. my small local shop (one man and his dog back street spanner) keeps a range of seals on the shelf and can normaly match me up from stock. but if i wanted gen yam then that would take me betwen 1-7 days as he only puts in an order to yam twice a week |

Forks, kinda complicated.
I always take a leaking fork off the bike to the stealer. Never had a FZ1 fork failure, but have blown WR forks, but not often. Anyway, I always have a lotta patience with the tech guys. I always request that the same tech work on everything. Had a failed valve cover gasket on a full sized Ford truck. Pain in the butt. So, I had the stealer do it. My tech guy got sick for a week. Got the truck back, all in order, after a couple weeks. I never pushed or complained as I wanted all done great and with good feelings. No flies go to vinegar, ya know. |

ive done a few forks without damping adjustment and they are easy if you have the right tools and know how

Genuine seals are suppplied by Fowlers, next day with post at £2/3.
He don't get them from Yamaha at all. Ring Fowlers and they will post to you as well. Pattern seals come from Hi Level (huge trade supplier to Motorcycle Trade) and arrive next day if ordered before 5.45 pm. Your dealer is pissing on your back and telling you that it is raining. Get it from there, plenty of people can do a fork seal (although I ain't one of them!) with no problems. On the Gas!

Your dealer cant get any more credit on his supplier accounts more likely!
Dont you need special tools for the forks? |

a similar thing happened at my local dealer recently - they used to order daily, they now ofter bi-weekly to cut down on costs.
they do however give you the option of paying an extra £2.50 if you want it ordered today |
