Cager in Training Posts: 11 (04/04/2008 12:14:50) Cager in Training Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts Report Post	Tags : insurance ive heard that some insurance companies are refusing to pay some claims because the bike had been modified,sometimes only in a small way, so i sent a list of my modifications to my insurance company (equity red star, through carole nash) , the mods are as follows rear shock changed for a hagon unit, yamaha touring screen, seat off the latest fazer s2, crash bars and bungs , yamaha carrier and top box, givi soft luggage holders,tank cover and tank bag, reply came back with a demand for an extra £32, that seems a lot of money for a few hundred quids worth of extra 's which make the bike more safe in the event of a mishap which would save them money on the what they would have to pay out, has anybody else been charged for mods that they have added or do you run the risk of your claim being refused in any unlucky event? Den

Weekend Warrior Posts: 96 (04/04/2008 12:55:57) DAS Born Again Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts Report Post	I've always taken it that 'modifications' that the insurance company need to know about are ones that affect performance - beit in the engine/exhaust/intake areas, different sized wheels etc (not even considering the whole streetfighter/new swingarms etc route) - and had this confirmed on the phone a year or two ago when renewing insurance. I've put a givi rack and box onto my 2003 Fazer 600 over the winter, I told the insurance company and I valued them myself at £50. I've not mentioned the touring (yamaha) screen, (yamaha) hugger or (yamaha) front fender extender (!) to them, as in a crash they're the last thing I'd worry about getting replaced, and they don't affect the performance or handling of the bike (not likely to cause an accident). I changed my insurance (from in the garage to on the drive) so when the renewal came through it was £8 higher, but also had a note of accessories to the value of £50 were covered (I've a £200 excess on the fully comp policy) so I cannot judge if the premium rose at all for the rack/box, if it did then it was next to nothing (Equity Red Star).

If you don't tell the truth (lie basically) then they are quite within their rights to withhold payment. If you're fully comp and have changed the sprockets / lowered the gearing - and flip the bike you'll get nowt as your mod has increased the performance of the bike. The same could be argued if it's stolen - maybe they stole it cos it had an anodised rear sprocket on show. Far better being honest in these things and paying the extra 50 odd quid, how much would losing your bike and not getting anything for it cost ? Baz

Original quote was £148 and the amended one £247. Slightly excessive maybe but at least I have removed any ' have you declared these mods ', .etc. etc. questions in the event of a claim. However, the reason for my post is that I declared the mods and agreed to the new quote. The next day, 25/4/08 I received my policy and on the statement of facts it said ' no modifications'. I phoned the brokers and was told that they'd send an amended statement to me. I went on holiday and gave them a further week but still no mail from them. I phoned them on the 9/5/08 and was assured that the mods were on file but that the statement of facts had no space to list them. I told them that this was unacceptable to me and I insisted that they send me confirmation that I'd declared those mods and they'd accepted cover. I await their response. The broker is Direct Choice & Insurance company is Equity Red Star Edit: Update: I received a letter this morning, plain and simple and of course no apology, quite curt actually. (H&R through NIG Skandia) I got other quotes before i renewed and got quotes of around the same price. When i told them i would be modifying sometiime in the future, all the other quotes turned to "oh, we can't insure you if have mods" So spoke to H&R and said got cheaper quotes etc, they matched it and i keep bonuses etc. Told them that i would be puttin mods on, they said that would hike the price right up, but they would note them and only insure me for stock parts, as long as they knew i had them, they didn't have to insure them specifically. should i crash and have a claim they will replace wih stock parts. Fairy muff But what now, i have another new headlight, braided hoses and a CCR end can that was 180 new when they were on sale. How much are they gonna tack onto the price when i tell em what i got, cos theres from what i read here, thats more atractive to theives and performance etc etc etc etc etc Robbin fuckin bastards My mate les gets a rant on when you mention insurance. His argument is since its a legal requirement for mot, then its done through the govt, similarly for tax, govt, but whilst the insurance is a legal requirement, the govt don't touch it with a barge pole and leave it to industry sharks to stick their corporate cock right up yer arse. If the law requires it, then the law should have some compensation for that requirement, even if its only a basic on the road minimal cover insurance, just to keep you legal. Club Racer Posts: 365 (16/09/2008 21:46:11) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts Report Post	Your mate les has a good point ray - I believe (sure some smart foccer will come and correct me here..) that in NZ, the govt DO provide the basic TP cover (presumably for a fee), and then its up to you if you go and buy theft, fully comp etc. Seems like a good idea, I think they have an issue in NZ, in that it costs a 18 yo spotty oik the same as a 45 yo with no claims ever - and you pay for yourself, not based on what car it is, so aforementioned spotty oik can run a 300hp monster, and actually have insurance. This means large numbers of boy racers killing people, rather than just the few that decide to do it here with no insurance.
